In April 2020, the U.S. Patent Office issued a ruling on a widely followed U.S. patent application that listed an AI machine as a co-inventor. The Patent Office denied an application for listing an AI entity as an inventor because only humans can be inventors under the US patent law & regulations. See decision here.

This decision is consistent with both the European Patent Office and the U.K. Intellectual Property Office respective rulings that AI constructs cannot be listed as patent inventors.
